My training for my triathlon has been hit and miss the past few weeks. With work being so busy, school coming to a close, and life in general being crazy now that we are carpooling together, training has taken a back seat. And that’s not even mentioning the weather factor. When it’s not raining or freezing, it’s hot and windy. And the pollen in the air has stuffed my nose like a turkey. I hate allergies. Excuses aside, the triathlon is this Saturday and I am trying to get as ready as I can.
On Monday, Cindy and I went to the park to jog. The running was going pretty good until an oncoming car made me nervous and I got too close to the edge of the pavement. My left ankle rolled over and I went down. The good news was that I didn’t feel a pop, so it didn’t break my ankle or even twist it, but it did sprain it pretty good. It never bruised, but even today, it’s still very tender to the touch and nicely swollen. After I rolled it, we jogged another mile or so, which may or may not have been a good idea. I haven’t run on it since, so hopefully the swelling will go down before Saturday. More IBuprofen for me.
Today, I decided to ride the bike, fist because it was beautiful outside, and also to see if pedalling messed with my ankle. I rode 16.5 miles and had no problems. So for the triathlon, I think my ankle will be fine up until the run at least. The 5K is mostly a trail run, so I will have to be super careful not to roll my ankle again on the roots. It will hurt much more doing it again since it’s already tender. I plan to take it easy and just make sure I finish. I hate injuries.
I was supposed to ride my bike today, on an amazing 45 mile course with great friends. Other obligations prevented me from doing just that, dedicating the afternoon to the open road. However, between other necessary actions of the day, I managed to get a few workouts in. First, I took my dogs on a 4 mile walk, from the house to the YMCA, around the lake a few times and then back home. We all enjoyed that, and it wasn’t even the warmest part of the day yet.
After making myself some lunch and doing some other things, I drove back to the YMCA, walked down to the same lake I was at with the dogs earlier, and proceeded to jog a 5K, which was about 6 laps around the lake. This run was to make up for the fact that the dogs wouldn’t run with me this morning, and for the fact that I didn’t get in a run yesterday. All I got to do yesterday was build a fence, and bike 20 miles. I was so cold after the bike ride, I traded in the 5K run for a hot shower. Today was different. The weather was warm, and the run went well. After I finished, the YMCA was about to open for the day, so I went inside and swam 500 yards in the pool, followed by a hot soak in the hot tub.
Once I got home, I bathed the dogs on the porch in the sun, and then made dinner for myself and my wife. Eating burgers with wifey is the perfect end to a glorious day. So I missed a great bike ride today, but I still think I made a pretty good day of it. What do you think?
The weather could not have been more perfect for the ride today. The hills could have been smaller however. I usually stay away from group rides where the course name has the word “Mountain” in it, but the day was too good not to ride, and I guess hills are good training. Two hours before the ride, I jogged 4 miles on the elliptical at the YMCA to loosen up, plus today was supposed to be a run day for my triathlon training. No matter what, tomorrow needs to be a run day. Since the weather is going to be great again tomorrow, I guess my wife and I will be running around the lake.
