My training for my triathlon has been hit and miss the past few weeks. With work being so busy, school coming to a close, and life in general being crazy now that we are carpooling together, training has taken a back seat. And that’s not even mentioning the weather factor. When it’s not raining or freezing, it’s hot and windy. And the pollen in the air has stuffed my nose like a turkey. I hate allergies. Excuses aside, the triathlon is this Saturday and I am trying to get as ready as I can.
On Monday, Cindy and I went to the park to jog. The running was going pretty good until an oncoming car made me nervous and I got too close to the edge of the pavement. My left ankle rolled over and I went down. The good news was that I didn’t feel a pop, so it didn’t break my ankle or even twist it, but it did sprain it pretty good. It never bruised, but even today, it’s still very tender to the touch and nicely swollen. After I rolled it, we jogged another mile or so, which may or may not have been a good idea. I haven’t run on it since, so hopefully the swelling will go down before Saturday. More IBuprofen for me.
Today, I decided to ride the bike, fist because it was beautiful outside, and also to see if pedalling messed with my ankle. I rode 16.5 miles and had no problems. So for the triathlon, I think my ankle will be fine up until the run at least. The 5K is mostly a trail run, so I will have to be super careful not to roll my ankle again on the roots. It will hurt much more doing it again since it’s already tender. I plan to take it easy and just make sure I finish. I hate injuries.
Should I be getting butterflies this early? Actually I am not yet, but I know I will sometime this week. It happens every time. A few days before a race, my stomach starts to spin. I guess it’s the anticipation of the event mixed with my nervousness of trying something new. In 6 days, I am racing, or should I say participating, in my first sprint triathlon. It’s my first triathlon of any length. I haven’t competed in a swim event since I was probably 5 years old. I have never competed in a cycling event, although I have been riding in group events for charity for other 10 years now. I also have a little experience with 5K running, but of the 3 disciplines, running is my worst. Am I ready? I don’t know, but I will do my best and hope to finish. Since it’s my first one, I am guaranteed a personal best. I just want to avoid the DNF or a DQ. I know that is possible. I will walk the 5K if I have to, but I will finish. I have confidence in that, but the butterflies are sure to come. It’s inevitable, I know. Will I swim too fast and burn myself out? Will I bike too hard and ruin my legs for the run? I will try not to, but you know how it is when you are in a race. You want to go go go, and it’s hard to pace yourself. I just have to keep telling myself that the race is only a race between me and myself. Just get through this first event without fault and then set the bar for the next one. I know there will be a second one. I already have the fever even before I do my first one. I volunteered at an Olympic Tri last weekend and I could see myself doing it maybe next year. I may have to get my wife to do the run portion for me, but I know eventually I will be able to run a 10K as well. It will be a great experience regardless.
Please wish me luck and help me hold off the butterflies if possible. The race is with me only, I know that, and I need to keep telling myself that. It’s all good. 🙂
Six more days…..
It’s been a few weeks since I have written anything. It’s been so busy around here, and with the ice storm a few weeks back, I have been keeping myself occupied by cutting down and chopping up trees that have fallen. It’s stillI a mess out there, with tree limb piles on every street, just waiting for the clean up crews to come take it away. My carport has a few years worth of firewood split and stacked now, thanks to our poor pear trees that did not survive the ice.
Because of the storm, not only was the power out at our house for 4 days, but I have gotten really out of sync when it comes to working out and writing. This week, I finally got back to the gym and did a few classes, got back in the pool and did some swimming, and today I got back on the treadmill. It wasn’t easy, but I managed to get a few slow miles in, and plan to continue training strong for the next few weeks. My first triathlon is in exactly a month, and I want to be in good enough shape to at least cross the finish line under my own power. Finishing a triathlon will be a big deal for me. I played sports in school, from basketball to soccer to track, and I was decent at most of them. But that was a long time ago. Now I am older and not in the best of shape. I have some work to do, and I am doing it, but it is going to take time and effort. I have ran some 5K’s, put many many miles on my bike, and seem to be getting back in the swing of things in the pool too. What I have never done is do all 3 of those things during the same event, continuously. It will be a challenge, I know, but it will also make my accomplishment list one item longer, and one more checked item on my bucket list. One month to go and I am going to make it.
My wife is starting day shift next month, which is going to give her and I much more time together, including carpooling to and from work, and also more time to get outside and bike and run together. Since the weather is finally turning in the right direction, we will have the kayaks on the water soon also. We have decided to keep a blog of our adventures, and as my loyal readers, you will be the first to hear about it when I start it. We haven’t decided on a name for it yet, or if I will link it to this blog or start a completely new one. Regardless, I hope you have enjoyed my writings so far, as few of them as there are, and I hope you will follow our new one too. The way we are going to try to manage it is that I will log one of our adventures, and then the next time we do an activity, she will log it and put her spin on things. We have been wanting to write a novel together for years and have never had the time, so this will be our new beginning to start to write together and see where it goes. Stay tuned and I’ll let you know when it’s up and ready.

What am I supposed to do now? I was in running shoes for 7 miles on Sunday and this was the result. It hurts and very tender, but I’m not sure what to do with it. Should I pop it? Or tape it? Is this the result of shoe or sock issues? I’ve had my running shoes for a year now, but never got a blister like this before.
Any thoughts or ideas on how to proceed? About how to prevent this from occuring again? I don’t want this to slow me down too much.

I was supposed to ride my bike today, on an amazing 45 mile course with great friends. Other obligations prevented me from doing just that, dedicating the afternoon to the open road. However, between other necessary actions of the day, I managed to get a few workouts in. First, I took my dogs on a 4 mile walk, from the house to the YMCA, around the lake a few times and then back home. We all enjoyed that, and it wasn’t even the warmest part of the day yet.
After making myself some lunch and doing some other things, I drove back to the YMCA, walked down to the same lake I was at with the dogs earlier, and proceeded to jog a 5K, which was about 6 laps around the lake. This run was to make up for the fact that the dogs wouldn’t run with me this morning, and for the fact that I didn’t get in a run yesterday. All I got to do yesterday was build a fence, and bike 20 miles. I was so cold after the bike ride, I traded in the 5K run for a hot shower. Today was different. The weather was warm, and the run went well. After I finished, the YMCA was about to open for the day, so I went inside and swam 500 yards in the pool, followed by a hot soak in the hot tub.
Once I got home, I bathed the dogs on the porch in the sun, and then made dinner for myself and my wife. Eating burgers with wifey is the perfect end to a glorious day. So I missed a great bike ride today, but I still think I made a pretty good day of it. What do you think?
The weather could not have been more perfect for the ride today. The hills could have been smaller however. I usually stay away from group rides where the course name has the word “Mountain” in it, but the day was too good not to ride, and I guess hills are good training. Two hours before the ride, I jogged 4 miles on the elliptical at the YMCA to loosen up, plus today was supposed to be a run day for my triathlon training. No matter what, tomorrow needs to be a run day. Since the weather is going to be great again tomorrow, I guess my wife and I will be running around the lake.

It was a beautiful day on the road. I just had to share. My average would have been better if I hadn’t stopped to take pictures, but that’s ok with me. I still rode faster than Tuesday.
